There are two parts to this book; first we have compiled notworthy authors to comment on a cross-sectional research design to examine whether parental compassion and self-image goals explain differences in the implementation of supportive and psychologically controlling parenting behaviors. Participants completed online questionnaires about child behavior, parent mental health, self-efficacy, interpersonal goals, and parenting. Child behavior, parent mental health, and self-efficacy were included because they are known to influence parenting behaviors To measure parental compassion and self-image goals, the Compassionate and Self-Image Goals Scale developed by Crocker and Canevello (2008) Study 2 was adapted to the parenting context.

Based on theory that self-image goals involve prioritizing one’s own needs at the expense of others (Crocker et al., 2009), it was hypothesized that self-image goals would reliably predict psychologically controlled parenting beyond the variance explained by child behavior, parent mental health, and parent self-efficacy . In contrast, compassionate goals are associated with responsiveness to others' needs and beliefs in interconnectedness with others. Therefore, it was hypothesized that compassionate goals would positively predict supportive parenting beyond the variance explained by child behavior, parent mental health, and parent self-efficacy. We also examined whether self-image goals could explain variance in supportive parenting and whether compassionate goals could explain variance in psychological control beyond child behavior, parent mental health, and self-efficacy.
